The Benedictine priory of Saint-Denis de Montmoreau was a dependency of the abbey of Notre-Dame de Nanteuil (Charente). The first known prior is Pierre, mentioned in 1089. The site was affected by the Wars of Religion from 1562 onwards. By the late 16th century, although it retained the title of priory, it no longer housed a community.

The church, which dates from the second half of the 12th century, was restored in the 19th century. It is a Romanesque building with a single nave and a transept. It has a central apse as wide as the nave, while the north arm of the transept was rebuilt; the southern side preserves its original semicircular apse. The west façade is particularly notable, with columns acting as buttresses that divide it into three sections. The lower part features a polylobed portal flanked by two blind doorways with sculpted lions in the tympana. The upper section is decorated with arcading.
